In 2012, together with my friend Zoe and Stavros from Haratsi, which is next to NiMAC, we decided to organise what would now be described as the second in a row thrift market, in an open parking lot space where at present new municipality buildings stand. I can’t remember if it was October or November. What I do remember is that it rained so heavily that the river swelled and flooded the area (especially its cemented and forgotten river banks). The market was cancelled, but the experience sparked a curiosity that would later turn into a bit of a love research interest about our river; drawn out of a familial, perhaps even karmic, bond with waters more generally. Together with collaborators, we have explored its springs, searched for its stories in archives and in oral histories, and walked through the mountains, the plains, and the mouth of Pediaios. From Machaira to Klapsydes. During this walk, we will talk about Chora’s river (Nicosia) through stories related to its geographical and cultural history, at three designated stops along the way. If you would like to bring your own stories about the river to share and discuss, that would be wonderful. (Evi)
